Animal Science Research Department in 1986, in line with the policies of the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization and the Hyderabad Karaj Animal Husbandry Research Institute, in order to carry out fundamental and applied research projects regarding the livestock population of the province, it started working at the Mehrgan station located at the 23rd kilometer of the Kermanshah-Kamiaran road.

After the merger of the Ministries of Agriculture and Sazandegi Jihad in 2004, this department, which was operating under the title of «Animal Husbandry Research Department» under the supervision of the Ministry of Sazandegi Jihad, was moved to the current building. Currently, under the supervision of the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad and with two sub-categories "Mehrgan Animal Science Research Station" and "Animal Science Research Department and Livestock and Poultry Nutrition Laboratory", one of the dynamic and influential sectors in the development of the livestock industry, especially light livestock and especially sheep. The squirrel breed is the dominant breed and one of the capitals of the province.
